Working Trials is a competitive dog sport derived from police and military working dog training. The Patrol Dog (PD) stake is the highest level in Working Trials and is designed to test a dogs ability in control, obedience, agility, tracking, and criminal work. It closely resembles real-world police dog skills but is open to civilian handlers and their dogs.

Course Overview

✅ Legal Responsibilities & Handler Skills

• Understanding and applying the Guard Dogs Act 1975

Certification & Assessment

As part of the BIPDT Security Dog Handler Training, handlers and their dogs will be assessed to ensure they meet the required standards. Certification is awarded based on competency in obedience, control, patrolling, criminal work, and legal knowledge.

This training is essential for security professionals who want to work legally and effectively with their dogs in real-world security environments.

Assessment

commences on arrival at the B.I.P.D.T. Training and Assessment Centre. This is not a Working

Trial or Competition where the handler and dog are called forward, but a practical assessment of Everyday competence.

Civilian Pet Dog Sport Training – Inspired by Working Trials Patrol Dog (PD)

At Cornish Dog School, we offer sport training for pet dogs based on real-world police dog training and Working Trials Patrol Dog (PD) exercises. This structured training allows civilian dogs to develop high-level obedience, scent work, tracking, and protection-style skills in a controlled, sport-based environment.

What is Working Trials Patrol Dog (PD)?

Working Trials is a civilian dog sport that tests a dog’s ability in tracking, searching, obedience, agility, and criminal work. The Patrol Dog (PD) stake is the highest level in Working Trials and replicates the skills required of operational police dogs. It includes:

✅ Advanced Control & Obedience – Off-lead handling, distance control, send-away and recall under pressure

✅ Tracking & Scent Work – Following a human scent trail and searching for hidden articles

✅ Agility Challenges – Navigating high jumps, long jumps, and scale obstacles

✅ Manwork (Controlled Criminal Work) – Chase and detain, recall from pursuit, search and escort techniques

Who Can Train?

✅ Any breed can train up to PD level – This sport is not exclusive to traditional working breeds. Any motivated and well-trained dog can develop these skills.

✅ For pet dogs & sports handlers – You don’t need to be in law enforcement to train at this level. Our training is adapted for civilian sport and competitive trials.

✅ For those interested in Working Trials – If you want to compete or simply challenge your dog, this training builds the foundations needed for trial success.
