Working Trials are the civilian equivalent of police dog work, testing a dog’s agility, nosework, and control. They are physically demanding and require both dog and handler to be healthy and fit.
History:
Working Trials date back to 1924 when the first event was held by the Associated Sheep, Police and Army Dog Society (ASPADS). In May 1927, the first championship working trial to be recognised by The Kennel Club was held by the Alsatian League and Club of Great Britain at Castle Bromwich.
1. Companion Dog (CD)
2. Utility Dog (UD)
3. Working Dog (WD)
4. Tracking Dog (TD)
5. Patrol Dog (PD)
Key Components:
• Nosework:This includes tracking and search exercises, assessing the dog’s scent detection capabilities.
• Agility:Dogs must clear three obstacles: a 1.676m (5ft 6”) scale, a 2.438m (8ft) long jump, and a 914mm (3ft) clear jump.
• Control:Tests obedience through heelwork, recalls, sendaways, stays, and retrieves.
Progression through these levels allows handlers and dogs to develop and demonstrate advanced working skills in a variety of challenging scenarios.
Founded by Wendy Beasley, UK Dog Sport is an inclusive and structured activity designed to be accessible to all dog breeds and sizes. It complements traditional Working Trials, serving as an entry point for newcomers or a parallel pursuit for current participants. It’s particularly suitable for dogs that may not be suited for the agility aspects of Working Trials or those that are retired but still active.
History:
UK Dog Sport was developed to provide a structured yet accessible platform for dog handlers to train and compete in various disciplines. It offers a progressive framework that emphasizes control, agility, and nosework, catering to a wide range of participants.
Levels of UK Dog Sport:
1. Foundation
2. Beginner
3. Novice
4. Intermediate
