To become a dog handler in the private sector, there are several essential requirements:
1. A Fit-for-Purpose Dog: Your dog must be well-trained, reliable, and suitable for the security tasks you’ll be performing, with appropriate obedience and protection training.
2. SIA Licence: An SIA (Security Industry Authority) licence is mandatory to legally work as a security professional in the UK, ensuring you meet the required standards of competency and integrity.
3. Suitable Vehicle (BS Standard): You’ll need a vehicle that meets British Standards (BS 8517-2) for transporting working dogs. This ensures your dog’s safety, comfort, and security while on duty.
4. Specialist Training: You must undergo specialist training with an accredited organisation, such as the BIPDT, to learn how to handle security dogs effectively in a variety of environments.
5. Public Liability Insurance: This is important for protecting yourself and your dog while working in the private sector, covering any potential incidents during your duties.
6. Dog Welfare Knowledge: Understanding the health, nutrition, and welfare needs of your dog is crucial, as you must maintain your dog’s wellbeing to ensure peak performance.
7. Uniform and Equipment: A proper uniform, protective gear, and handling equipment (such as leads, muzzles, and collars) are necessary for both your safety and professionalism while on duty.
These key elements will help you meet industry standards and operate successfully as a dog handler in the private security sector.

The British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers (BIPDT) Security Division was founded to set and maintain high standards in the training and assessment of security dogs and handlers across the UK. Spearheaded by Tom Buckley, an expert with decades of experience in police and security dog training, the division was created in response to a growing need for a professional body that could provide proper certification and assessment in the private security sector.
Tom Buckley, with his extensive background in working dog training, recognized that many security dog handlers in the private sector lacked formal guidance and standardized assessments. The BIPDT Security Division was formed to address this gap, offering a structured and credible path for dog handlers to achieve certification, ensuring that both handlers and dogs meet the rigorous standards required to work effectively in security roles.
By establishing clear training and assessment criteria, the BIPDT Security Division has become a respected authority in the field, providing handlers with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the demanding world of security dog handling and recognised by leading insurance companies.
